Based in Mahagi Territory (Ituri) - Democratic Republic of Congo

Chief Alipacu Losani Athindha Jean is the traditional leader of Djukoth Chiefdom in Mahagi Territory in Ituri Province. From his palace in Ndhama, he has distinguished himself as a visionary custodian of land, culture and community wellbeing. He was recognised with the Kilimo Environmental Prize for his exceptional leadership in mobilising his people to protect forests, practise sustainable agriculture and restore riverine ecosystems.

Under his guidance, communities in Djukoth Chiefdom have adopted climate resilient farming methods and embraced conservation as a shared responsibility. He has championed the defence of land rights, the protection of peasant farmers and Indigenous communities and the peaceful coexistence of the different groups living under his authority. His civic leadership has also been vital in safeguarding his people against external armed threats while promoting dialogue, dignity and stability. Chief Alipacu has been instrumental in creating a network of demonstration sites that showcase good agricultural and ecological practices. He led the development of tree nursery beds and seedling production centres across the chiefdom which now supply coffee seedlings, native African tree species and fruit trees to farmers throughout the territory. His initiatives have strengthened livelihoods while supporting the restoration of degraded landscapes.

Through his efforts, more than two hundred acres of vacant land have been brought under protection and transformed into a thriving forest zone within the Blue Mountain area of the Lendu Plateau overlooking Lake Albert. This restored habitat is now home to numerous bird species, amphibians and critical water sources in one of Ituri’s key biodiversity areas. Chief Alipacu is also a strong advocate for women’s leadership. He promotes the participation of women in dialogue and decision making on climate solutions, adaptation strategies and land rights. His commitment to environmental stewardship and human rights reflects the powerful role those traditional leaders can play in confronting climate change and safeguarding the future of their communities.
