Based in Gwok Nyeri Centre Village, Akara Groupement, Panduru Chiefdom, Mahagi Territory, Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of Congo
Ucol Ukethwengu Jean Bosco was recognised as a 2025 Kilimo Environmental Prize laureate for his role in advancing community led reforestation, climate resilience and green livelihoods in Panduru Chiefdom.
Community leader and civil society actor, Ucol's work has positioned him as a central figure in environmental conservation and rural development in Panduru Chiefdom. Based in the Gwok Nyeri commercial centre, he plays a critical role in mobilising communities to respond to visible climate impacts, including declining rainfall, soil degradation and reduced agricultural productivity across Mahagi Territory.
Since 2018, he has led a reforestation initiative across multiple localities, including Gwok Nyeri, Uthego, Abeko, Araa, Jupa Songe and Nyawira. His approach is grounded in the principles of the green economy, promoting tree planting as a foundation for sustainable development rather than short term exploitation of land. By restoring tree cover, his work improves soil fertility, stabilises local microclimates and protects water infiltration zones essential for farming.
A key impact of his work is youth employment and income generation. The reforestation activities he coordinates create paid work opportunities for young people, reducing economic vulnerability and discouraging engagement in destructive land use practices. These livelihoods contribute to household income while reinforcing long term environmental stewardship.
Ucol’s leadership strengthens community resilience by linking climate action with economic opportunity. His work supports food security by improving agricultural conditions and promotes land conservation in areas experiencing accelerating deforestation. Through local leadership and sustained engagement, he demonstrates how community driven solutions can address climate change while advancing social stability and economic dignity.
