As part of celebrations for World Radio Day 2025, Terra FM, which is subsidiaries of Environmental Defenders, hosted a three-day festival, offering several activities including sports activities and a dialogue in conference setting.
During the conference, Environmental Defenders (ED), a nonprofit conservation and human rights organisation dedicated to protecting biodiversity and indigenous people’s rights launched their annual Kilimo Prize award.
Samuel Jaryekonga Warom, a Communications Director of Environmental Defenders used the opportunity to call on the community to nominate their heroes for the 2025 Kilimo Prize Award Edition.
The nomination process kicked off on February 20, 2025 and will last two months. The Kilimo Prize Award, initiated by Environmental Defenders in 2023, celebrates exceptional contributions by individuals, organisations, communities, and traditional leaders in safeguarding tropical forests and combating climate change within the Albertine Rift and Congo Basin regions
The award promotes environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture in Albertine region. Alongside the Award launch, a conference held at the AIC Church in Ramogi Chawa, in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) discussed the a number of subjects including the intersection of climate justice, food security, and sustainable agriculture, emphasising the role of radio.
A panel Comprised primarily of agricultural extension agents, women’s group leaders, youth activists, and civil society representatives, explored the link between climate change and local food security and livelihoods.
The panelists highlighted sustainable agricultural practices and discussed how radio can promote their adoption.
The panel discussed how to address inequalities and the concept of “climate justice” by examining community programmes and the mobilisation of local actors (women, youth, and civil society) through radio campaigns,
After discussion, they defined an initiative to combat climate change and the issue of equality in the face of the means of punishing polluters.
The panelists also defined food security as access to physical, economic and sufficient food, while sustainable agriculture ensures the sustainability of production systems in response to social and economic challenges.
It has also been found that climate change has created food safety challenges, as the agricultural calendar has become complex, making production and harvest difficult.
The lands that were used in the past are now dominated by sand and rubble. On the lake, panelists noted poor management that does not foster better productivity for the local residents to ensure their survival.
In view of the importance of agricultural activities, agricultural scientists have been invited by the panelists to cooperate with journalists to raise awareness of the population.
Winding up their presentation, panelists in this group spotted the inequalities hampering climate justice to the effect that some files are treated so that sensitive questions are neglected. The panelists therefore invited everyone to work for the awareness of the population on the issue.
The launch of the 2025 Kilimo Prize Award and the insightful discussions at the conference underscored the vital link between climate justice, food security, and sustainable agriculture. As nominations remain open for the next two months, Environmental Defenders and Terra FM continue to champion the recognition of individuals and communities making meaningful contributions to environmental conservation. The discussions held at Ramogi Chawa highlighted the pressing need for collaboration between agricultural scientists, journalists, and local actors to raise awareness and drive action. As climate change increasingly disrupts traditional farming cycles, initiatives like the Kilimo Prize serve as crucial platforms to inspire innovative solutions and collective efforts towards a more sustainable and equitable future.
